How To Use Vacuum Desiccator Cabinets?

Desiccators are storage cabinets with dry atmosphere which contain desiccants in sealable enclosures in order to prevent moisture sensitive contents like cobalt, chloride paper for further use. It has great role in protecting those hygroscopic chemicals from humidity which reacts with water.

In static desiccation system, there are various sizes that vary between an in-line cartridge sizes to a larger cabinet that may be nitrogen purged, or may contain a desiccant tray. Whenever the lids of the desiccators are opened, the contents inside are exposed to atmospheric moisture. Therefore, the chemicals like alkali metals, which react fast with atmospheric moisture, are not appropriate for storing. Instead, schlock-type apparatus or a glove box may be more suitable for such kind of storage.

In some cases, desiccators may even be used for removing moisture from an almost-dry sample. But when it is considered that desiccator cabinets alone will not be enough for the purpose, Abderhalden's drying pistol may be used in that case.

How vacuum desiccator works?

Desiccator cabinet works by preventing oxidation of MSD in the cabinet by controlling moisture. When a porous desiccant such as the silica gel is used by Dri-Box, it removes water from air space by multi layer absorption. The thin layers of the water molecule are attracted to the surface areas of the desiccant in that process.
It also works by the process of capillary condensation in which most of the smaller pores are filled with water.

The purpose of using the desiccator during the cooling of the crucible

In a desiccator, heated materials are cooled in order to prevent it from accumulating moistures while it gets cooled. The interior of the desiccator will remain dry as the desiccant is at the bottom, and the moisture in the atmosphere cannot enter the container as it is completely sealed.

Why are you to cool the crucible before it is weighed?

If you put the hot crucible for weighing its mass, the convection currents will start happening in the surrounding air around the crucible. That is why, whenever you need to weigh a crucible, you must let it cool first as the heat from the crucible warms the surrounding air and causes it to rise upward and then it cools down and falls.

The way of using desiccators in laboratory

Most of the laboratory desiccators are round in shape and made of heavy glass. It is usually placed on a removable platform so that it can be stored properly in a laboratory.  The desiccant, such as Silica Gel, fills the space under the platform. The color changing silica has a key role as an indicator whenever it would be refreshed. Whenever the indicator gel absorbs moisture it typically changes from blue to pink. The other colors may also be used here.
There may be a stopcock included for permitting the desiccator to be evacuated. These kinds of models are actually known as vacuum desiccator cabinet.

While applying the vacuum of a desiccator, it should be properly strapped in order to minimize the damage to the desiccator by a sudden implosion. Vacuum grease is applied here to achieve a good seal.

Importance of Using Desiccators in your Laboratory

Well, you all might have been to a lab or a chemistry lab in your school, college or anytime. You might have seen many things that look like glass and that are used to store chemicals that are hydrophobic and simply react with the air or the moisture in the water.

You should know that this is called the Desiccator and it is used in a number of ways in the lab. There are many types of Desiccators that are available in the market, and it is all upto your desire to choose a perfect one for you. The sole purposes of all these Desiccators are to conserve the chemical and to prevent the reaction with water or the moisture.

What are the uses of Desiccator and Dry Boxes?

There are a lot of uses of Desiccator and Dry Boxes in a lab, and it can help you in a lot more ways. Here mentioned below are some uses that you can get, and this is why these are important. So, the uses of Desiccator are –

The common chemicals that are hydrophobic like MgSO4 and all that react with moisture and water are to be used by the Desiccator. The uses of this are that the Desiccator will take out all the humidity out and never let any of the particles of water to be inside of the Desiccator. This makes it helpful for the chemicals never to get wet, and this can help any chemical to be dry all day long. This is all that you need, and it can help you a lot in the labs.

However, there are many types of Desiccators that are there in the market, and you can use them all easily. So, here we present you the Vacuum Desiccator that can help you to generate the vacuum into the container and just as the name, it will help you to create a vacuum for the desired chemicals.

How to set up a Vacuum Storage?

So, you all might know that the vacuum storage is easy to use and is the best thing that you can have in your labs. This is important in the labs, and this is as important in the foods nowadays. You can see packaged foods that are coming in packs and that you can use with the preserved air into it.
The Desiccator worked just the same way, and you just have to follow some instructions that can help you to use the vacuum storage or a vacuum desiccator cabinet easily. So let us get started –
  • The first thing that you need to do is to put the salt in the Desiccator, and it can be anything. For instance, let us take that the salt that you use is the silica get which is really easy to use.
  • Now, you have to attach the vacuum pump to the Desiccator after completing all the formalities and everything. Now as the vacuum get increasing, you can have a look at the silica gel as it changes color when it is in a vacuum from the free state.

For accurate experiment results choose Acrylic Vacuum Chambers

Acrylic Vacuum chambers are mainly used in some vacuum experiments. This vacuum chamber is ideal for removing unwanted gas, biological test, material testing and other processes that required sustained low and intermediate vacuum desiccator cabinet.
Importance of Vacuum chamber:
  • This vacuum chamber is ideal for removing unwanted small parts and mixed liquids, general purpose vacuum experiments etc.
  • This vacuum chamber is ideal for transporting contamination and moisture-sensitive particles through it.
  • The reactions that take place are clearly visible in this vacuum chamber. Because it is made of transparent glass.
  • This vacuum chamber is made of O-ring seal which supports vacuum level down to 29.9”Hg.
  • 304 stainless steel, solvent welding, and chrome-plated hardware make a protective environment not to contaminate.
These are the importance of Acrylic Vacuum Chambers. All these factors make the vacuum chamber ideal for degassing operations, biological tests etc.

Features of Vacuum Chamber:

One-Inch wall thickness: These vacuum chambers maintain a one-inch wall thickness. It makes the chamber to sustain the full 29.9”Hg vacuum and chamber’s integrity. If walls are thin stress from the vacuum can damage the chamber. That’s why walls are made of one-inch thick.

Gauge and Metering Valves: Gauge of this vacuum chamber helps us to know the internal pressure of the chamber. Valves are helpful to get rid of something unwanted in the chamber.
By Gauge and valves can monitor the chamber’s condition.

Optional Burst Valve: This adjustable valve is helpful to limit the internal pressure in the vacuum chamber. When it is required to use, just check out the pressure gauge and tune the Burst valve.

Multipin Feed-Through: This Multipin is used for collecting samples within the vacuum chambers. By this Multipin, it will be easy to record the leak tests in the chamber automatically.

Coaxial SMA Feed-Through: This connector is an extra layer of material for interfacing electrical test. This option will be installed and 50 Ohm connectors are the best for this activity.

Electrode Feed-Through: This is a testing equipment to feed the vacuum chamber with power or data wiring. These optional feed through are sealed around the wires.

Inlaid O-Ring: This Inlaid O-Ring is a precision-routed channel sealed along the chamber perimeter. This makes to provide an ultra-low leak rate.

Available Glass Top: This glass top is for the optical testing and monitoring. But the glass top must be high clarity to ensure the optical testing and monitoring.

Vacuum Chamber Accessories:

Merging valve is two included above the chamber. These merging valves allow unwanted gases to expel out from the chamber before vacuum applied. Vacuum Gauge is used to sense the mercury level. It senses and indicates vacuum on 0-30”Hg scale. Vacuum safety Relief Valve this one is used to adjust the pressure level in the vacuum chamber. For full vacuum chambers, it will be placed above to maintain vacuum level to protect samples. Finally, Vacuum Chamber Glass Top this will be used for assigning valves and gauges to a side panel. Its main purposes include optical testing and monitoring.

Significant Terms To Look At The Lab Desiccator

Nothing is more wretched than hot, humid summer day when you just not able to feel comfortable. Of course, everyone tries to complain about this, but few people feel that they can do much. The usual complaint made by the people is that humidity is making people miserable and not heat. Even human feel such kind of effects with the atmospheric changes then think about the chemicals. This is a small example to compare the feel of chemical substance with the change in atmosphere. The usage of the laboratory equipment is mainly to preserve the chemicals from the changes in humidity level of the atmosphere. We can find the diverse number of equipment, but the equipment specially madeto preserve the chemical is desiccator.

The following discussion would be about the desiccator box and its types. The desiccator is the airtight container specially designed for the laboratory purpose that maintains the atmosphere of low humidity with the used of suitable drying agents, which will occupy the bottom portion of the desiccator. The needs of using the desiccator is both for the storage of the dry objects and for cooling the heated objects. This means, the desiccator greatly helps the chemical not to expose to moisture that normally presents in the atmosphere.

Most probably, the desiccator will make up of aluminum. The airtight seal is the most important portion to keep the chemical at the right level and the silicone grease to the place where the body and the lid of the desiccator meets will maintains this. The noticeable thing is to be careful of not adding too much of grease. Once the desiccant added to the desiccator box, the lid should not remove any more unnecessarily. Therefore, one should meet with these factors once they start choosing the desiccator for their needs. The users can also available with various types of desiccator. They are:
  • Secador desiccator
  • Space saver standard and vacuum desiccator
  • Gas ported desiccator
  • Dry keeper desiccator cabinet
  • Portable Desiccator Cabinets
  • Lab companion vacuum desiccator
  • Round style lab companion vacuum desiccator
Further discussion is going to about the portable desiccator cabinet, which most of the people try to find for their needs. The selection of desiccator is only when one looks for the optimal protection against moisture and particle. When you start choosing the portable desiccator, one can be flexible and can easily take it to many places wherever they want. When you choose this type, you can easily specify your needs about the inlet and the outlet ports for your purpose.

This option gives you flexibility on both to transport and store the parts without risk of contamination. When you need this desiccator cabinet for prolonged storage, you can simply leave your desiccator connected to the nitrogen line. Like this, one can find with some other types of desiccator. Hence, once you know your needs can easily find your desiccator from these types simply.
