Importance of Using Desiccators in your Laboratory

Well, you all might have been to a lab or a chemistry lab in your school, college or anytime. You might have seen many things that look like glass and that are used to store chemicals that are hydrophobic and simply react with the air or the moisture in the water.

You should know that this is called the Desiccator and it is used in a number of ways in the lab. There are many types of Desiccators that are available in the market, and it is all upto your desire to choose a perfect one for you. The sole purposes of all these Desiccators are to conserve the chemical and to prevent the reaction with water or the moisture.

What are the uses of Desiccator and Dry Boxes?

There are a lot of uses of Desiccator and Dry Boxes in a lab, and it can help you in a lot more ways. Here mentioned below are some uses that you can get, and this is why these are important. So, the uses of Desiccator are –

The common chemicals that are hydrophobic like MgSO4 and all that react with moisture and water are to be used by the Desiccator. The uses of this are that the Desiccator will take out all the humidity out and never let any of the particles of water to be inside of the Desiccator. This makes it helpful for the chemicals never to get wet, and this can help any chemical to be dry all day long. This is all that you need, and it can help you a lot in the labs.

However, there are many types of Desiccators that are there in the market, and you can use them all easily. So, here we present you the Vacuum Desiccator that can help you to generate the vacuum into the container and just as the name, it will help you to create a vacuum for the desired chemicals.

How to set up a Vacuum Storage?

So, you all might know that the vacuum storage is easy to use and is the best thing that you can have in your labs. This is important in the labs, and this is as important in the foods nowadays. You can see packaged foods that are coming in packs and that you can use with the preserved air into it.
The Desiccator worked just the same way, and you just have to follow some instructions that can help you to use the vacuum storage or a vacuum desiccator cabinet easily. So let us get started –
  • The first thing that you need to do is to put the salt in the Desiccator, and it can be anything. For instance, let us take that the salt that you use is the silica get which is really easy to use.
  • Now, you have to attach the vacuum pump to the Desiccator after completing all the formalities and everything. Now as the vacuum get increasing, you can have a look at the silica gel as it changes color when it is in a vacuum from the free state.

Everything You Need to know about the Desiccator Uses

Everyone who is familiar with labs and mainly chemistry labs know the importance of Desiccators in the lab. There are many salts that react with water really fast, and really this type of salt can end up getting worse if you don't put them in a humidity-free environment. So, a Desiccator helps the salt to be in the same state, and it provides it a much-needed humidity free or water free environment that easy. You can choose from a lot of type of Desiccator Box that are available in the market, and they all can help you as you want them to.

These Desiccators can help you to preserve metal like MgSO4, some of the plates of them and all you need is a Desiccator. Keep all these things in mind, and there are many reasons why these Desiccators are used in the labs nowadays. It has a great impact on our lives, and we cannot run a lab without a Desiccator in our lab. So, here we have mentioned all the things that you need to know about Desiccator, and that will blow your mind.

What is the purpose of Using Desiccators?

The traditional Desiccator looks just like a glass bowl with a long end, and it is used for the sole purpose of getting rid of humidity. Well, there are many Desiccants that you can use for the Desiccators, and it will always help you a lot. The most common Desiccant that is used in these Desiccators is the silica gel, and that is really easy to use and store. You can do a lot of things that can help you with the Desiccator and here is how you will use the Desiccator to get the proper benefit out of it.

How does Desiccator work?

The glass bowl with a lower end contains a lid that is called the grease rim. The rim is really a helpful thing that helps to prevent the moisture. Coming down to the bottom, there is a partition that you can use to put the chemical. So, down the partition, there is a space, and that is for the chemical that will act as an absorbent and also known as the Desiccant. You can use many things in the place of a Desiccant, and it will help you to get rid of humidity.

How can Silica Gel help you as a Desiccant?

Well, silica get is said to be one of the most abundant Desiccants of all time. If you want to use up the Desiccator for the first time then using the Desiccant as a Silica Gel can do miracles for you. So, the thing that happens during the use of the desiccator cabinet is that when it starts absorbing all the humidity around the Desiccator, then it turns into a different color. The most common colors that are used in it are blue, and it turns pink. However, you can change the colors as per your desire.

What You Need To Know About Closed Loop Filtration Glove Boxes?

When it comes to dealing with highly sensitive or harmful substances, it is necessary that great care is taken to protect against any harm to scientists and the laboratories. There are certain substances which can easily react with particles in the atmosphere and cause unwanted reactions. Some substances are also harmful in nature whose airborne molecules might harm the scientists. Hence, one needs an enclosed space in which operators can work safely with these chemicals.
This is where Glove boxes come into foray. These are enclosures in which operators can work with these harmful and sensitive substances from the outside through the gloves which go inside the enclosures.

Various types of glove boxes available

There are multiple types of glove boxes who provide different levels of isolation. There are boxes which provide complete controlled atmospheric isolation where even the temperature, humidity levels and pressure are different from outside. These types of glove boxes even isolate the gases so that substances that are reactive to even gas molecules or humidity levels remain uncontaminated.
Then there are filtered glove boxes where the enclosures provide complete isolation from outside environment, but they don't provide amenities to create different atmospheric conditions inside. In these boxes, although most of the particulates that comprise of harmful molecules, dirt, soot, bacteria, aerosols etc. are filtered, they don't filter gases. Thus, for any chemicals that are reactive to different gases, one would need an inert atmospheric isolated glove box.

Even amongst the filtered glove boxes, we have two types:
  1. Open loop filtered glove boxes: These boxes are open to the outside atmosphere where the openings are fitted with HEPA/ULPA filters that separate all the particulates.
  2. Closed loop filtered glove boxes: These boxes are not directly open to the outside atmosphere and the air inside is filtered after several rounds of circulation through the filters.
Unlike open loop filtered glove boxes, the closed loop glove boxes circulate the internal air to go through several rounds of filtration through the HEPA/ULPA filters before it is released outside.
This not only ensures that the air inside is properly filtered, but also speeds up the filtration process. These closed loop glove boxes provide a more efficient way to filter all the harmful particulates so that the operators remain unharmed.

There are however few points to remember before purchasing a closed loop filtered glove box:
  1. They are not for highly dangerous substances: If you are working with highly dangerous bacteria, pathogens etc., then you would need a containment glove box rather than the filtered glove box. These devices are not made for handling substances that require complete separation from the outside
  2. Requirements: There are various closed loop filtered glove boxes that also provide atmospheric isolation and can work in both the forms. But these are far more expensive than the regular ones. So, choose the one based on your requirement.
  3. Size: These filtered glove boxes come in various shapes and sizes. Some are small and portable that can be shifted from one place to the other and can only be worked by one person where as some are big and stationary where multiple people can work together.

Why do we need portable exhaust hoods?

Properly disposing off the chemicals is one of the most important factors of any laboratory. This also goes for the chemical fumes and the noxious gases that are released. Hence, every laboratory must have an exhaust hood through which scientists and lab experts can safely get rid of these gases.
But installing a hood with a duct is a costly affair and not every laboratory is big enough to afford it. In such a case, opting for exhaust hoods that do not require ducts and are portable in nature can be a highly suitable idea.

These hoods would be low on cost when it comes to their installation. There would be no use of breaking the building and making proper exhaust outlets. Further they would be portable, so you can shift them wherever you want. If your laboratory keeps shifting, then having a portable exhaust hood is much more desirable than installing ducted exhaust hoods everywhere.

But, there are certain caveats to it. Let us look at some of them.

Do you need a portable exhaust hood?

You would have to decide if portable exhaust hoods are right for you. These enclosures are not built for extreme heavy-duty work as their ducted counterparts. They might not be able to handle filtering the fumes of dangerous substances or burning of chemicals in large quantities.

Every portable hood comes with its own guidelines and limits. How much it can filter, what are the gases that it can filter etc., they all differ between different hoods. So you would have to decide if the portable exhaust hood would be sufficient.

Can you handle the maintenance?

These hoods require some maintenance. These enclosures work on a filtration basis which require filters. And these filters would have to be replaced and the frequency of their replacement would depend upon the filtration strength of these filters and the amount of work that you would be doing with them.

Depending upon those conditions, you might have to frequently order and replace the filters. Although doing this wouldn’t be as expensive as installing a ducted exhaust hood, but if your work entails long time working with heavy duty chemicals, then it is perhaps best to invest on a duct based exhaust hoods.

So the benefits of owning a portable hood would be that:
  1. It would be cheaper than installing a ducted hood. So, if you are looking for an option for buying a hood for a small laboratory or for your home laboratory, then portable hoods would be a great option.
  2. They are extremely versatile to use. Shifting them from one place to another would be much more easier.
  3. Cleaning them would be simpler. Changing their filters is not as hard or dirty as cleaning the exhausts of the ducted hoods. So, it can be done by relatively anyone.
But there are negative aspects of the portable hood as well, such as:
  1. They are not built to handle heavy quantity of work or dangerous chemicals.
  2. Changing their filters can be easy, but they can also be dangerous. Those filters would contain all the harmful gases that were filtered, so they can pose a serious threat to a person’s health if they are not careful.
  3. Anyone who wants to work with the hood would have to learn about properly using and maintaining it. As such, there is a bit of a learning curve involved as their maintenance is fundamental.
So, before going ahead and opting for a portable ductless fume hood, make sure that it is what you actually need and that you can work with it.

The Features And Uses Of Horizontal Laminar Flow Hood

Laminar Flow Hood or a clean bench is a professional piece of equipment that is used in various industries ranging from research to assembly of electrical components. When it comes to delicate materials and samples, it becomes necessary to maintain specific conditions to ensure there is no contamination. Our Laminar flow hoods are built to make sure they fit the conditions of the procedure without any hitches in the process. We understand the importance and efforts of these procedures and that is why our horizontal flow hoods are designed to maximize productivity and minimize contamination.

What is Laminar Flow?

The circulation of air inside a clean bench is crucial in maintaining a sterile atmosphere which is essential for some samples and procedures. Laminar flow in its essence means that the airflow inside the hood is uniform when it comes to the direction and the velocity of the circulation. By maintaining such precise conditions, Laminar Flow hoods take preference when it comes to performance under pressure. Horizontal Laminar Flow hood are a specialized piece of equipment that circulates the air in a horizontal direction.

Developed almost five decades ago, the laminar flow principle has dictated the way air is circulated inside a lab enclosure. It has become an industry standard and we have incorporated the same within our Horizontal Laminar Flow hood. In our long line of products, there are different types of Laminar flow hoods but there is one underlying theme to all of them. All of the clean benches use the traditional unifacial airflow principle to maintain sterile conditions and reduce turbulence inside the enclosure.

Why our Laminar Flow Hoods?

Our Horizontal Laminar Flow Hoods direct HEPA filtered air horizontally towards the operator to prevent the samples from coming in contact with contaminants. Our clean benches adhere to modern industrial standards and are built to create ISO 5 standard conditions inside the work desk area.
